How to Make Claude Edit Videos in Your Style
Your editing style · A practical guide
You've seen those AI edits, right? Same captions. Same zooms. Same everything. You can tell it's AI in one second. That's because Claude has no idea who you are, so it guesses. And a guess looks like everyone else's video. Here's how to teach it your taste.

Watch: How to train Claude Code to edit like you
Sound familiar?
- Every edit Claude gives you looks like everyone else's.
- You typed a whole paragraph. “Make it engaging. Add motion graphics. Make it pop.” And it still looked generic.
- You tried to train it yourself, and something was missing. One of my students said it best: “I was missing something, and it just was not working correctly.”
- You don't even know what your style is yet.
None of that is your fault. Nobody ever taught Claude who you are. So let's do that.
Why “make it pop” doesn't work
What kind of motion graphics? What kind of sound effects? Where do those sound effects even come from? And “make it pop”? What does that even mean? Claude has no idea. So it grabs the same default animations everyone gets. That's why everyone's videos look the exact same.
How to teach Claude your style
1. Write your rule books
A rule book is just a doc that tells Claude exactly how to edit, and it reads it every single time. I made seven:
- Pacing. When to speed up, when to let a moment breathe.
- Cutting. Cut every pause, every mistake, every dead second.
- Curiosity. The hook, and the little open loops that keep people watching.
- Emotion. Which words matter most, so Claude makes those land.
- Captions. Font, size, where they sit, how many words at a time.
- Sound design. Which sound goes where. A tech sound doesn't go on a zoom. You use a whoosh for that.
- Motion and colour. The zooms, the animations, your colours.
2. Make two folders: Good and Bad
The rule books teach Claude how to edit. These two folders teach it what YOU like. In Good, drop 2 or 3 of your best videos. In Bad, drop edits you hate. Cheap captions, too much text, dead air. Captions way up at the top, captions way down at the bottom, cutting you off mid-word, a card that's gone too fast.
Why bad examples? Because telling someone what NOT to do is the fastest way to get what you want. Same with anyone new on your team. Then type this:
Look at everything in Good. That's how my videos should look and feel. Then look at Bad. Never do anything you see in there. Write down what you learned, so you remember it every time.
This takes 5 minutes, and you only do it once.
3. Save it as your skill
The training lives in one thing: the skill. A skill takes your rule books plus the exact style you want, and saves it all into Claude's memory. So every time you edit, it remembers. Oh, you like your captions like this. Oh, these are the exact animations you want.
Once you've got the exact style you want, just type:
Save this as my skill. Call it (your name) editing style.
And it saves it. Just like that. Every time Claude edits a video, it remembers your style and the rule books it followed.
4. Use it with one short message
From now on, this is all you type:
Yo, let's edit this Instagram reel using my (your name) editing style skill.
Every message I send, from setup to fixes, is in Claude video editing prompts.
5. Fix it once
When it gets something wrong, give it the exact time, what's wrong, and what you want instead. Then tell it to update the skill. It knows for next time, and it doesn't make that mistake again.
You're not stuck with one style
You can have as many styles as you want. One raw clip, five completely different videos: your style, a business style, an explainer, a split screen, a SaaS look. All you change is the skill name in that one message. Editors, this is how you make a style for every client.
Got a few styles? Keep them all in one place with a Claude style menu.
Your style checklist
- Did I write my seven rule books?
- Do I have a Good folder with 2 or 3 of my best videos?
- Do I have a Bad folder with edits I hate?
- Did I save it as my own skill?
- When it gets something wrong, am I telling it to update the skill?
You can build all of this yourself
Everything in this guide works. But you still have to write the rule books, fill your folders, give it notes, and fix the same mistakes, again and again, until it finally edits like you. That takes months.
And most of you don't have months, right? You're shooting, editing, running a business, all at once.
Just like Nijah. She's a solopreneur, running a business with a full-time job on top. Here's what she left in her review:
“As a solopreneur and with a full time job, it's hard managing social media and video creation, so having an easier workflow is principal.”
Nijah, solopreneur
Well, look what she says now:
“Now it will be a no brainer to video edit, because I can just talk to Claude and make changes with voice dictation. Voila. Let it cook.”
Nijah, solopreneur

Questions people ask
Can Claude really edit in my style?
Yes, once you teach it. Rule books, good and bad examples, then save it as your skill.
Is it for a beginner like me?
Yes. If you can say what you like and what you hate, Claude can learn it.
Can I have more than one style?
Yes. Make one for you and one for every client or brand. You just change the skill name in your message.
How long does it take?
The Good and Bad folders take about 5 minutes. Your rule books get better every time you fix something.
